Racine mom charged with child neglect after 6-year-old child found wandering alone

RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Racine mom has been charged with child neglect after her 6-year-old son was found wandering alone outside.

Officers were called to 4 Mile Road near Green Bay Road in Caledonia around 2 p.m. on May 24 for a report of a small child wandering alone. Officers were advised that the stretch of road the child was on was one of the busiest in the village and that it doesn't have sidewalks.

Officers located the child who was emotionally distraught, scared, and had tears running down his face. The child told police that he was the only one home and that his mom was at work.

The child told police that he was home alone for a long time and the last thing he ate was oatmeal for breakfast.

Officers made contact with the child's mother who said that she had made arrangements for someone to watch the children, but she was unable to provide contact information for that person.

Officers spoke with the child's school who informed them that he had behavioral and cognitive disabilities.

The boy's mother was arrested for child neglect for failing to provide necessary care and leaving him alone with no supervision knowing he had cognitive delays.
