Racine man faces 5th OWI charge after fleeing traffic stop
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A man with four prior Operating While Impaired offenses was arrested following a high-speed chase on Sunday, Dec. 23 at around 12:15 a.m. The arrest came amidst heightened New Year's Eve law enforcement efforts to combat impaired driving.
Clifford Johnson, a 56-year-old from Menomonee Falls, was reportedly initially stopped for Unsafe Lane Deviations on Highway 20, near E. Frontage Rd. in Mount Pleasant. Sheriff's officials say that he then accelerated away at a speed of 70 mph.
That pursuit lasted for over a mile, according to officials, leading to a high-risk apprehension.
Johnson reportedly had a revoked driver's license and was required to use an Ignition Interlock Device. Officials report that his preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.137.
Sheriff Christopher Schmaling emphasized the gravity of driving while impaired in a Wednesday, Jan. 3 press release. "If someone chooses to put the community at risk by driving while impaired, they will eventually face legal consequences, including being arrested and taken to jail."
Johnson faces charges including a fifth OWI offense, fleeing and eluding, failure to install an Ignition Interlock Device and operating while revoked due to prior OWI. He is being held at the Racine County Jail on a $17,900 bail.
