RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) – There’s a major break in a cold case murder in Racine County. An arrest has been made in the slaying of a mother of three 17 years ago.
One man is now behind bars and the other is still on the run. The Racine County Sheriff’s Office says they’re pleased to bring closure to the victim’s family.
Back in February of 2000, Racine County Deputies found 39-year-old Juanita Zdroik’s body on the side of the road in the town of Raymond.
After years of investigating and working leads, the Sheriff’s Office says the men involved are Miguel Cruz and Elias Burgos.
"Juanita left behind three beautiful children, two daughters and a son. I recently had the privilege of speaking to Juanita’s son. He expressed his family's gratitude and the tenacity of my investigative team's efforts. They are anxious for closure, while at the same time somber when they think about their mother's last moments,” says Racine County Sheriff Christoper Schmaling.
The Sheriff’s Office says Cruz was found and arrested in Tampa, Florida. Burgos is still on the run and believed to be hiding in Puerto Rico.
