Prison guard emptied trash as suicidal girl called for help

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Records show a guard at a troubled Wisconsin youth prison took out the garbage before responding to a suicidal inmate's call for help.

The guard was one of three at the Lincoln Hills School for Boys and Copper Lake School for Girls to resign or be fired last month.

Corrections officials determined the three lied under oath, falsified logs and failed to immediately respond to the 16-year-old's call for help before she tried to hang herself.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the records released Thursday show for the first time that corrections officials fired employees over the incident, which left the inmate with severe, permanent brain damage.

The state settled with the girl's family for $19 million.

Gov. Scott Walker last month signed legislation to close the prison by 2021.
