Pop-up farmer's markets bring fresh food to Milwaukee's food deserts

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Tuesday, Aug. 9 marked the return of the pop-up farmer's market on Milwaukee's north side.

They're happening each Tuesday this month at different locations.

Tuesday's pop-up market took place at Ascension Family Health Center.

They're free to attend and include a variety of local vendors and fresh food.

Organizers say this market is a way to bring healthy food to areas they call food deserts.

"We can hand them a handout for things closest to their house...what you have to think of too is that some people don't have a way to get to the food, so we have to go a step further and a lot of the doctors worked hard on that," said Jenny Ovide, Ascension Family Health Center nurse.

Farmer's markets on Aug. 16 and Aug. 23 will take place at the Century City Business Park near Hopkins and 31st.

The market on Aug. 30 will take place at MMSD West Basin -- 4350 N. 35th Street.
