Police: Shots fired in New Berlin's Malone Park due to fights over basketball courts
NEW BERLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gunshots rang out in New Berlin's Malone Park late Wednesday, Aug. 25. Police believe the gunfire is connected to groups fighting over the use of the basketball courts.
According to New Berlin police, on Tuesday night, Aug. 24, there were reports that a group of young adults harassed and intimidated another group of citizens using the basketball courts in the park. Police say the purpose of their conduct was to get the group using the courts to leave so they could use the courts.
When the group didn't leave, a person from the group trying to use the court displayed a firearm.
Police say the following evening, Wednesday night, they upped patrols in the park to deter any further unwanted and illegal activity. Shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers reported hearing multiple gunshots near the area of the basketball courts and then observed a group -- who had been using the courts -- leaving the area.
Officials say one was injured. The incidents remain under investigation.
