MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police say a 12-year-old girl was killed in a double shooting near 38th and Rohr Monday evening, Oct. 10.

Olivia Schultz was helping her mother, Celeste Wilson, 46, carry groceries in from the car when her mother says the two were shot.

Wilson was shot on the left side of her body and discharged from the hospital Tuesday. She says she was being treated for her injuries when she was informed her daughter had died.

The family described Schultz as a caring, loving daughter, sister and cousin with a big smile and her whole life ahead of her.

"My heart goes out to the family in regards to this, it is another unacceptable violence within our city," said Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman. "I would hope we all find some level of urgency and some level of understanding that we all have a responsibility to make our community safe."

According to the medical examiner's office, Milwaukee has recorded 186 homicides so far in 2022, 10 more than at the same time last year.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson released the following statement regarding the death:

"I am extremely saddened by the murder of a 12-year-old girl last evening. I extend my deepest condolences to her family and her friends.
This should not have happened and is simply inexcusable.
Sadness is not the only emotion that I’m feeling and I’m sure, so many other Milwaukeeans are feeling. The shooting death infuriates me. I cannot imagine what was going through the mind of the killer when the trigger was pulled.
I want the person or people responsible for this death to be held fully accountable. Anyone who commits such an egregious act belongs behind bars.
Let’s also finally acknowledge that there are too many people who would commit acts of crime and killing who can too-easily get their hands on guns. As a society we have got to address this issue so these sorts of events don’t continue to happen."

Authorities are seeking unknown suspects at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Milwaukee police at 414-935-7360 or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS.
