Plain clothes sheriff's deputies to be on select MCTS bus routes in effort to boost security
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- New measures are now in effect on Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) buses aimed at increasing security for riders and bus drivers.
MCTS has announced a new initiative aimed at increasing security for riders and bus drivers.
"Sometimes you need someone with you for safety," said Chandana Marubudi, MCTS rider.
In a news release, MCTS says in partnership with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, law enforcement in plain clothes will be on select routes.
"I don't know if extra policing needs to happen on the bus because I haven't experienced anything too bad," said Kaia Dunlap, MCTS rider.
CBS 58's Pavlina Osta asked which routes law enforcement will be on, an MCTS spokesperson said, "To preserve the effectiveness of the program, specific details such as route locations, the number of deputies, schedules, and deployment frequency will not be disclosed at this time.”
"If anything, funding should go back into making it cheaper for people to get on the bus," said Dunlap.
This pilot program is addition to MCTS' in-house Public Security Officers Program where uniformed security is present to prevent fare evasion and enhance safety.
This comes less than a month after three people were arrested for attacking bus drivers and a contracted security officer.
Some riders say this new program will make them feel at ease.
"Officers in the bus? yeah of course," said Marubudi.
