GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- We all know preseason is not for the experienced players on the football team. Last season, the Green Bay Packers -- as well as every NFL team -- had to make their roster decisions based only on practice. With the Packers first preseason matchup against the Houston Texans set for Saturday, Aug. 14, the team will get the added benefit of giving the roster a better evaluation.

"To be able to go out there and see them in live action is going to make that process much easier for all of us," said Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur.

With that in mind, the Packers will be going with Jordan Love to start Saturday's preseason game with Kurt Benkert seeing some time behind him.

As for the three time MVP, 37-year-old Aaron Rodgers playing in the preseason? Coach LaFleur said, "most likely not."

Saturday will be the first chance for backups to get their chance to see the field and prove they deserve playing time in the regular season -- and they want to take advantage.

"It's trying to make this roster spot and another opportunity for me to get out there," said Kabion Ento, Packers cornerback. "Showcase my skills and play at a high level and play football at a high level."

"Being able to compete against someone that you don't play against every day that's something that all of us football players we love. You get somebody who's not used to your techniques, somebody that you go up against that you're used to seeing them every day. You got to adapt as the game goes on and just compete at a high level. so I'm real excited," said Shemar Jean Charles, Packers cornerback.

While they do not need a lot of preseason action, there are a few guys who entered this week injured like Aaron Jones and Kenny Clark.

Coach LaFleur said he had no long-term concerns but those players could be out for a week or so.
