Fond du Lac, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Fond du Lac Fire Rescue officials say one person was sent to the hospital with multiple burns following an explosion and fire stemming from a portable fire pit in a driveway of a residence.

Officials say it happened on Sat. May 3 at around 5:52 p.m., at a home on North Park Avenue.

Upon arrival, the fire in the fire pit was extinguished and the med crew found one of the residents inside the house with burns to his hands, arms, and face.

The man was taken to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac for further treatment.

Officials say it was determined that the individual attempted to light a fire pit with some gasoline being poured from a gas can onto some cardboard in the fire pit.

The gasoline ignited the cardboard and also followed the gas to the can where it blew up in the hands of the occupant igniting his clothes.

Crews say the force was strong enough to blow the top of the can off the container, and it was not able to be found.

Fond du Lac Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone to never use gasoline or other flammable liquid to light any type of recreational fire.

Fond du Lac Fire Rescue was assisted by Fond du Lac Police officers who assisted with traffic control and investigation
