Multiple people injured in school bus vs. city bus in Racine
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Authorities responded to a school bus vs. city bus crash in Racine on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Officials say it happened near Goold and Shoop Streets Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, there were nine people injured in the crash. Two people needed to be extricated by the Racine Fire Department.
Officials say six of the nine victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The two people extricated were transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
No students were on the bus at the time of the crash.
According to police, the driver of the school bus is a 61-year-old man who has been employed by First Student bus company for four years.
A driver's aide/monitor was also on the school bus; they were identified as a 26-year-old woman who has been employed by First Student for two years. Both the driver and the aide were among the six that were transported.
The Ryde Racine city bus was carrying six passengers and the driver at the time of the crash. Three passengers and the driver were among those injured and taken to a hospital. The driver is a 41-year-old woman who has been employed with Ryde Racine since 2019.
Neighbors on the block told CBS 58 that speeding drivers are often a concern for there here. "It's like our street is a racetrack," said Rachel Drenkhahn. She's lived here for a decade and says she's worried for her children playing outside because of speeding cars. "It's very scary," she said.
While police have not said if speed was a factor yet, neighbors say the city should consider installing speed humps on the block.
Police are interested in additional information that anyone may have in relation to the crash.
