MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- If you're planning to sign up for insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act, the time to do it is now.
The open enrollment period started in Milwaukee on Friday, Nov. 1. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Governor Tony Evers, and other leaders helped kick it off.
The state is launching a new campaign to let people know when and how they can sign up. Officials say about 400,000 residents did not have health insurance at some point last year.
"We're seeing the health and well-being of so many of our residents go into jeopardy because of a lack of access to affordable health care. And specifically, right here in my hometown , the city of Milwaukee, the number of people enrolled in health insurance, has unfortunately gone down since 2015," said Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes.
The open enrollment period runs from Friday, Nov. 1 through Dec. 15.
