New $45 fee for travelers without Real ID or passport now in effect

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Starting Sunday, Feb. 1, it will cost you $45 to get on a plane if you do not have a Real ID or a passport.

It's part of the agency's new "TSA Confirm ID" program.

Passengers with non-compliant forms of identification must go to a TSA website, sign up and pay the fee before they access security, but that fee will only be good for 10 days.

"No one wants to wait in the line at the airport in general, no one wants to stay in the airport just so go get your real ID," said Felice Colucci, traveler.

The easiest way to see if you have a Real ID is if there's a star in the upper right corner of your ID.

According to TSA, more than 94 percent of passengers already use their Real ID or other acceptable forms of identifications.

"I just got my driver's license renewed last summer and I learned if you have your passport, you can still use that, so I didn't want to go get another one," said Bob Wade, traveler.

New signage with a QR code is going up at airports.

Flyers can register on the spot at the airport if necessary.
