MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Just hours after the only gubernatorial primary debate, a new Marquette University Law School Poll about the Democratic primary was released, showing expanded support for State Representative Francesca Hong.

A new Marquette Law School Poll survey of Democratic primary voters finds state Rep. Francesca Hong leading with 38%, followed by former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes with 16% and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley at 7%. Former Department of Administration Secretary Joel Brennan is supported by 2%, and State Sen. Kelda Roys is also the choice of 2%.

“The biggest news is that she’s increased her lead compared to last week and it's increased across every demographic group we look at,” said Charles Franklin, the director of the Marquette Law School Poll.

This was the first poll since David Crowley re-entered the race and received Governor Tony Evers' endorsement.

Among respondents in the survey, Crowley is seen favorably by 22%, unfavorably by 10%, and 67% say they haven’t heard enough to have an opinion. When the question was last asked in March, 16% of Democratic primary voters had a favorable opinion of Crowley, 4% were unfavorable, and 79% hadn’t heard enough.

Among primary voters, 36% say the Evers endorsement makes them more likely to support Crowley, 9% say less likely, and 56% say the endorsement doesn’t make any difference.

When asked about the hypothetical consolidation that would have to happen for any other candidate other than Hong to win the primary, Franklin said, "It would have to be of a sort that we haven’t seen evidence of so far in the campaign.”
