MPS: Milwaukee School of Languages football player attacked following game

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The principal of Milwaukee School of Languages says a football player was attacked by a group of three individuals following a football game Thursday night, Oct. 8.

According to a letter sent home to families and staff Friday, during Thursday night's football game, there were two instances in which someone reported seeing a weapon in the visiting team's stands. No weapon was found in either instance.

As players returned to the school following the game, officials say three individuals attacked a player with what looked like handles of weapons.

Friday morning, the school went into a "hold" as Milwaukee police searched a 16-year-old student reportedly seen with a gun after the football game. The school says officers searched the student, their backpack, and locker, and no weapon was found.

The hold was lifted after a short time and the school day continued.

School staff says the student is no longer in the school building.

An investigation into the incident after the football game is ongoing.

Dear MSL Families and Staff,

We value you as members of our school community, and we want to keep you informed about a serious situation as well as our continued efforts to keep students and staff safe.

This morning, our school went into a HOLD because of a report that a student in the school today had been seen with a gun last night after the football game. We called the Milwaukee Police Department which responded in tactical gear given the seriousness of the situation. Their officers searched the student, the student’s backpack and the student’s locker, and no weapon was found. During the HOLD, students stayed in their classrooms. The HOLD was lifted after a short time, and our school day continued. The student is no longer in the school building. As a proactive step, Milwaukee Police Department school resource officers and additional safety assistants will be present at the school for the remainder of the day.

The HOLD was directly related to our investigation of what took place after the football game as players returned to the school. Three individuals attacked an MSL football player with what looked to be the handles of weapons. We immediately notified the Milwaukee Police Department, which is investigating. During the game itself, there were two instances in which an individual reported seeing a weapon in the visiting team's stands. No weapon was found in either instance, and please know that all attendees must go through a required safety scan before entering the stadium.

We are sharing this information with you because we are committed to taking all action to maintain a safe school community. What happened after last night’s game is absolutely unacceptable. If any students are found to have been involved, the district will take all appropriate disciplinary action following the MPS Student Code of Conduct, which can be found inside the Parent/Student Handbook on Rights, Responsibilities, and Discipline.
