Mount Pleasant Caregiver Charged with Stealing from 71-Year-Old Woman
A Mount Pleasant caregiver has been charged with identity theft and theft for stealing from a 71-year-old woman she was paid to take care of on a daily basis.
Ashley Adams has been charged with theft, felony personal ID theft and felony bail jumping.
The daughter of the woman said Adams had been placed in charge of her mother who had Cerebellar Atrophy and Spinal Mycolonus. Adams job was to assist her in moving around, run errands and take care of her daily needs including helping her take medications.
Adams has a pending possession of narcotics drugs case which she was out on bond for.
The daughter said she believed Adams had been stealing her mother’s prescriptions. She said had her mother been given the doses correctly there should be 5 pills remaining but the prescription was empty.
On another occasion, Adams told the daughter and police she had dropped 120 pills in a glass of milk and had to pour out the milk. In addition, Adams had told the daughter that she believed her mother was taking too much medication as prescribed. She said she flushed the remaining pills down the toilet.
Adams was allowed to use the 71-year-old’s Discover Card and Sear’s Citi Bank MasterCard for incidentals for the woman. However, there were $1,990 charges on the Sear’s card. The charges included games, payments to Clerk of Court of Walworth County for a case Adams was involved in, and payments to Adams cell phone.
As well, unauthorized purchases were made on the Discover Card. Those purchases were for a bicycle with 16-inch wheels, Advance Auto Parts, Twins Cellular, Taco Bell, Ivy Nails, Walmart, Shopko, Kohl’s, Walgreens, McDonald’s, Main Moon, Barnes and Noble and more merchants. The total of these purchase could not yet be determined, according to the complaint.
