MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A ribbon cutting held Monday, Sept. 21, marked a new, first-of-its-kind affordable housing development in Milwaukee's Uptown neighborhood.

Milwaukee County invested over $1.3 million into the Phoenix Residential Apartments located on 50th off Layton Avenue. Of the 31 units inside the facility, 21 are affordable housing units and the other 10 are crisis units that are part of a medical respite program for Aurora Health Care patients transitioning from treatment to permanent housing. 

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley shared how the units will provide necessities for patients. 

"Now, I've said this before and I'll say it again, housing is health," Crowley said. "This is meaningful and groundbreaking because it bridges the gap between housing insecurity and behavioral health needs, bringing critical services together under one roof." 

Patients will be provided with safe and accessible places to stay, along with access to staff and services to help them heal and build towards strong futures while living in the crisis respite units.
