Milwaukee's 109th annual Christmas tree set to headline the 2022 Cheer District

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's famed Deer District will adopt a new name for the fourth consecutive year as the City of Milwaukee has chosen the site to house the city's Christmas tree for the 2022 holiday season.

"O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree. How lovely are thy branches!" The city will share that sentiment as the Cheer District showcases the spirit of the holidays to Milwaukee residents starting Friday, Nov. 18 when the tree's lighting ceremony officially takes place.

This year will mark the 109th year of Milwaukee's Christmas tree. That makes it the longest-running official tree in the nation, with the only exception being New York City.

Nominations for this year's official tree are being accepted until Friday, Oct. 14 by calling (414) 286-CITY.

The tree, illuminated this year by We Energies, is not the only reason the Deer District will be known as the Cheer District later this year, as numerous other festivities are planned. Crafters, artists, performers, small business owners and full-time makers will participate in the Milwaukee Maker's Market from Dec. 9 - 11.

Meanwhile, Breakfast with Santa will be hosted by the MECCA Sports Bar & Grill on Dec. 11, featuring a breakfast buffet, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus as well as a cookie decorating kit.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson expressed his excitement about the 2022 holiday season in the Cheer District in a Friday press release. He said, "Deer District has become a central gathering place in Milwaukee, and the official city Christmas tree will be a great complement to all the activity and excitement there."
