MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police are investigating after an elderly woman was sexually assaulted in Riverwest.

Police say a 73-year-old woman was just out for a walk in the park when the man attacked her.

“I don’t walk down here alone in the morning anymore,” said Riverwest resident Lilli Petsch-Horvath, who lives right by the park. “At least early, just knowing that the assault happened earlier in the morning and the woman was by herself.”

Police say it happened Tuesday at Kern Park just after 7 in the morning.

“It was surprising, especially so early in the morning,” said Nathaniel Glick, who also lives near the park.

“That’s scary just because it is so close to where I live,” said Petsch-Horvath. “And also a bit of a surprise because it’s fairly a safe area and a safe park.”

Residents out in the park told us they’re grateful to see police patrolling more, but the assault has them thinking about changing their schedule.

“People are not out doing things together in groups, there’s no one using the softball field, there’s no one playing on the tennis courts,” said Laura Gronek who also lives nearby. “So, it’s hit or miss when there might be someone just happen to be walking their dog or something.”

Residents say they’ll be more vigilant from now on, and take more precautions.

“We’re all fortunate that we all do look out for each other,” said Gronek.

“Just always be aware when you’re walking I think, because crime can happen anywhere,” said Glick.

Milwaukee police are still investigating the incident.

The suspect is described as an African American male, 30-40 years old, standing 6'2" tall with a stocky build.

He was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, dark shorts and possibly had a black bandanna on his head.
