MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee police officer from district seven has been shot along with a 39-year-old suspect on 46th and Hampton. 

Around 6:46 p.m. Milwaukee police officers were patrolling in a marked squad car the area around W. Hampton Ave, which has seen recent violent crime. 

The officers spotting two individuals flashing guns and attempted to stop them when they fled on foot. 

An officer exited the car to give chase on foot. He encountered one of the officers in an alley on 46th St. and commanded the suspect to drop the gun. The suspect refused and gunfire was exchanged. 

The suspect and the officer were both struck. The second suspect was arrested without incident. 

The suspect that was shot was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. 

The officer, a 30-year-old male with over seven years of service, was also transported to a hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. He was also the one that shot at the suspect. He will be put on administrative duty which is routine in an officer involved shooting. 

The investigation is ongoing.

Two sources tell us that the officer was shot in the leg.

CBS 58 arrived on scene and observed that no ambulances were there. Many people have been watching the scene for the past two hours and a woman, who lives nearby, was told by MPD that she won't be able to get to her house for a few hours. 

When asked if the officer will be ok, an MPD sergeant told CBS 58 "yes." 

According to residents, the area has seen a lot of violence in recent weeks. Parents are worried about their children learning to fight violence with violence. 

Late Thursday night, June 12, the Milwaukee Police Association responded with the following statement:


Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and MPD held a press conference about the shooting.
