Milwaukee officer injured after pursuit, struggle with suspect; 2 arrested
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — A Milwaukee police officer was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle pursuit ended in a crash and a struggle with a suspect, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.
Police said the pursuit began around 1:47 p.m. near West Hadley Street and North 58th Street after officers attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving.
The driver allegedly refused to stop, and a pursuit followed.
The chase ended on North 48th Street when the suspect vehicle crashed into a tree, according to police.
After the crash, both occupants allegedly ran from the vehicle.
Police said the passenger, a 19-year-old man, was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.
The driver, a 22-year-old man, also fled on foot.
According to MPD, while officers attempted to take him into custody, the driver tried to disarm an officer. Police said the man was unsuccessful but was able to remove a firearm magazine from a pouch on the officer's vest.
The suspect then allegedly struck the officer several times, causing substantial injuries.
Police eventually took the 22-year-old into custody.
The injured officer, a 32-year-old man with more than four years of service, was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the officer has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Multiple firearms and suspected narcotics were recovered from the suspect vehicle, according to MPD.
Criminal charges are expected to be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.
