Milwaukee leaders host community event on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- June 15 has officially been announced as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Milwaukee.

Community leaders hosted Thursday's event to bring more awareness to the abuse and needs of older adults.

One study found that for every case of reported elder abuse, 24 cases go unreported.

People who joined the event participated in a walk led by County Executive David Crowley.

"I had a bunch of our seniors come talk to me about how important it was to make sure we continue to invest in the programs and services," said Crowley. "And I made sure to let them know that my door will always be open."

Milwaukee County's aging and disabilities services also hosted a resource fair for people wanting to learn more about elder abuse and the warning signs.
