Milwaukee Fire Department conducts door-to-door smoke alarm checks
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It's National Fire Prevention Week and the Milwaukee Fire Department on Tuesday, Oct. 6, went door to door checking for working smoke alarms.
The fire department was joined by volunteers from various community organizations, including the American Red Cross, Milwaukee Admirals and Milwaukee Bucks.
New smoke alarms were installed in homes without working ones.
"Please make sure that besides having working smoke alarms in your home, that you check them. Make sure that you have an escape plan, make sure that you close your doors at night. Keeping the door closed at night is going to prevent the smoke and the heat from coming inside your bedroom, and if you ever have a fire and you need to shelter in place, that door is going to prevent the smoke, the heat, and the fire from entering your room and is gonna give you that time to wait for the fire department to get there and help you out," said Carlos Velázquez Sánchez, director of community relations for the Milwaukee Fire Department.
The Milwaukee Fire Department recommends checking your smoke detector on a monthly basis.
If you don't have a working smoke detector, you can request to have one installed by calling the MFD Smoke Detector Hotline at 414-286-8980.
