MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The City of Milwaukee has announced an extension for leaf collection in the city, allowing residents to rake their leaves into the street until Sunday, Nov. 26.
This decision, announced on Friday, Nov. 10, extends the original deadline from Wednesday, Nov. 15.
The city's announcement noted that around 15,000 tons of leaves are prevented from entering waterways and sewer systems each year, instead being converted into nutrient-rich compost. Residents with fewer leaves are encouraged to mulch or mow them to enrich their lawns and gardens.
Rules for effective leaf collection include raking leaves loose into the curb lane while maintaining a one-foot gap between the leaves and the curb to prevent equipment damage and flooding. Piles should be kept away from sewer grates, storm drains and low-hanging trees. Yard debris is allowed on top of leaf piles, but grass clippings, pumpkins, litter or bagged materials should be excluded.
The city reminded people to separate brush from leaf piles and can request brush collection through Nov. 30.
Following the collection period, any remaining leaves and yard debris can be taken to City Drop-Off Centers. Up to 6 cubic yards can be deposited without fees.
As brush should be separate from the leaves, requesting collection of brush can be done through Nov. 30 by calling (414) 286-City or by clicking here.
