Milwaukee DPW crews ready for winter weather

Milwaukee--  The City of Milwaukee unveiled its battle plan for winter weather, and it includes a new weapon that true Wisconsinites will appreciate.

\"Here is the cheese brine.  It will be combined with the rock salt then spread on the streets,\"  said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett during a news conference Thursday at a city DPW facility.

Milwaukee is the first major city to combine road salt with the liquid, cheese-making by-product to treat snow and ice-covered streets.  The city is getting cheese brine free from a dairy in northwestern Wisconsin.  The environmentally friendly material has proven to be a more effective de-icer than rock salt alone. Barrett said \"Mozzarella Brine is preferred, as a high salt content in this variety is estimated to work the best with rock salt.\"

The cheese brine mixture will only be used on streets in Milwaukee's Bay View Neighborhood during this pilot project.
