Milwaukee doulas program hopes to promote healthy babies

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Leaders in Milwaukee are helping soon-to-be moms in one of the city's neighborhoods.

The city is starting a program to provide doulas to mothers in the 53206 zip code. Community-based doulas give pregnancy and childbirth education like labor coaching, breastfeeding promotion, and counseling.

"To allow the doulas to be part of our effort to provide healthier babies and healthier mothers in the city of Milwaukee," said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barret.

The new doulas program is a collaborative effort between the city's health department and Milwaukee County.
