Milwaukee couple says new renovated home in Metcalfe Park is a 'dream come true'

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee couple is moving into a home of their own and it's their dream come true.

It's happening through a community effort in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood to make houses more affordable.

"I'm so excited. It's our house and we live here now," said Shirley Dunn, new homeowner.

Shirley and Tyrone Dunn will live in the renovated five-bedroom home on the city's north side. The Metcalfe Park Community Bridges organization hosted an open house with the Dunns on Friday, Jan. 30.

The couple will pay $901 a month through a Rent-to-Own model, and the payments will go toward not only ownership, but also taxes and insurance.

The Dunns were chosen to live in the home through a community selection process.

"So we're here now, we're so proud of Metcalfe Park for making it happen for us. We've been renting for many, many years. Eight years, almost nine years around the corner," said Dunn. "Now we're coming right around the corner still in the community. We're gonna do some more years."

The Northwestern Mutual Foundation is part of the effort. It's the third community-led home to be completed in Metcalfe Park and we're told more are on the way.
