WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- It cost $226 million to build. State and county officials say it could help victims of crimes get answers faster.

The newly opened Forensic Sciences and Protective Medicine Facility in Wauwatosa opened its doors Friday morning, Oct. 9.

“Three years ago, we broke ground on this building,” said County Executive David Crowley.

The new facility houses the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office, Office of Emergency Management, and the state’s Crime Lab Operations.

“While our organizations have different roles, we are all connected by a common purpose: serving people when they need us most,” said Colleen McCarthy, vice president of Versiti.

Inside, there are 10 autopsy rooms, a state toxicology lab, DNA testing, and more. Officials say this is just one way to help evidence travel faster among agencies.

“It’s a crucial step towards streamlining operations, improving collaboration, strengthening our region’s ability to respond to public safety challenges,” said Crowley.

For years, the county’s medical examiner’s office operated out of a building that’s nearing 100 years old.

“We have the talent and the expertise with the folks that are working here,” said Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul.

Leaders hope the impact of the new facility goes beyond just modernized equipment, but helps families in this community and across the state during their most difficult moments.

“Because families who come here to identify their loved one are experiencing one of the hardest days of their lives, and they deserve to be met with dignity,” said Crowley.
