MILWAUKEE (CBS58) -- Many in the community are working to rebuild after last weekend's historic floods.

On Sun. Aug. 17, a group of volunteers organized by Milwaukee County Parks cleaned up Pulaski Park. 

"The neighbors here absolutely love it," said Patrick Chaves, Community Engagement Coordinator, Milwaukee County Parks.

The serene park in Milwaukee was hit hard by last weeks historic floods.

"The water line was up to where the hill is starting but the water line go as far as the basketball court," said Chaves.

To help, Community Engagement Coordinator with Milwaukee County Parks, Patrick Chaves, organized a cleanup at the local Milwaukee park. 

"The main focus was getting the piles of sticks and debris from the flood to get that out of the way to beautify the park," said Chaves.

Volunteers Katerina and Zecilia both grew up across the street. Now they're giving back to the park where they built core memories 

"Lot of memories basketball, sliding down the hill that was probably my favorite ones," said Katerina Kozinski, volunteer.

"This is an opportunity for us to come back and continue to take care of a space that we cherish in our hearts," said Zecilia Alamillo-Roman, volunteer.

The flood uprooted plants, bringing debris down this part of the Kinnickinnic river.

"We found some crazy things a shopping cart, tires, a stroller, clothes, cans, a lot of stuff," said Kozinski.

The community has been leaning on each other for the past week.

"It hit everybody and everyone has their own issues at home but it's not like oh we don't have time for that we have our own stuff at home its we are also going to make time for the community and the park that gave back to us," said Kozinski.

Zecilia says that's what makes Milwaukee special.

"If something is going on at home and they just want to leave that for a moment and go access a local park I think to create that opportunity for them is really important," said Alamillo-Roman.
