Milwaukee County Jail inmates to get free phone call to family on Mother’s Day

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Milwaukee County Jail inmates will be able to call their families for free this Mother’s Day.

Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt and County Executive Chris Abele approved CenturyLink’s offer to give every inmate one free five minute phone call on Sunday.

In a statement, Schmidt said, “Inmates calling their mothers or a close family member on a special holiday such as Mother’s Day is a wonderful way for them to stay connected to their family support network. I thank CenturyLink for bearing the cost of the calls to make this possible.”

“The justice system has become a system for mass injustice. Letting people behind bars call their loved ones on Mother’s Day is a small reparation, but is a step. These calls are just a start of a movement to end the new Jim Crow,” said Davette Baker, Organizer for Citizen Action of Wisconsin.

Citizen Action of Wisconsin organizers recently reached out to request the free phone calls. CenturyLink is the jail inmate phone provider.
