Milwaukee Co. officials discuss efforts to address food insecurity during the holidays
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee County leaders are working to help keep people fed this holiday season.
On Tuesday, Dec. 9, county leaders gave an update on how contingency funds are being used to supplement food assistance benefits.
The county set aside $150,000 to support families affected by the recent government shutdown.
The Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has also partnered with 13 local food pantries to distribute nutritious food to households most impacted by food insecurity.
"As the cost of food and health care continues to climb, there are too many Wisconsin families fighting every single day to just make ends meet. Simply put one struggling family is one too many, and that's why we have to continue -- continue working together to make sure the people of Milwaukee County and the people of the state of Wisconsin have basic access to food assistance and the supportive services that they absolutely deserve," said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.
At the event, volunteers also packed bags for meals for families for community food distribution.
