Miller Park prepares for historic soccer match

MILWAUKEE-- The excitement over the World Cup soccer tournament couldn't come at a better time for Milwaukee, as the city hosts its first international soccer match at Miller Park on July 16th.

Crews began stripping the field on Sunday night to transform it into a soccer field.

For the first time in history, the pitcher's mound is non-existant at the park since it was constructed in 2000.

\"We brought an excavator in and dug out the mound so its nice and flat,\" said Michael Boettcher, the Brewers Director of Grounds, who's taking a new challenge so Chivas de Guadalajara can play Swansea City at Miller Park on Wednesday.

The main concern is to preserve the existing field, said Boettcher. Adding \"they're making sure it's in good shape so when the team (Brewers) returns, the grass is no different than when they left here\".

The Brewers have been in talks with Major League Soccer for the past 18 to 24 months to make this game happen.

\"i think its goign to be tremendous exposure for miller park and southeastern wisocnsin,\"

said Jason Hartlund, VP of Brewers Enterprises and Event Services.

And considering the World Cup just wrapped up, the timing of the match in Milwaukee couldn't be more perfect.

More than 30,000 tickets have been sold so far, from at least 30 different states.
