Garage floor collapses at Milwaukee apartment building near Knapp and Astor

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS) is assessing the structural integrity of a building after a garage floor collapsed at an apartment building near Knapp and Astor Wednesday, Jan. 7.

According to the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD), a driver pulled into a parking stall, heard a noise, backed out and then pulled back in, when the floor collapsed.

The car fell into the hole, and the driver was able to get out safely without injury.

MFD says concrete had been newly poured over an aging floor in the garage, causing it to give way.

DNS on Thursday morning said a pipe underneath the flooring system broke in the collapse, and as part of the heating system, all units temporarily lost heat. They say an emergency repair was made, with heat fully restored to seven of the eight floors by 1:30 a.m.

Residents are allowed to stay, according to DNS, as the issue is isolated to the garage floor.

They're calling the incident a "structural failure of the flooring;" however, a full assessment has been ordered from an engineer's report.

No vehicles or non-workers will be allowed in the garage until the order is closed.
