MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Mayor Cavalier Johnson is declaring tomorrow, June 3, National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Milwaukee.
The mayor was joined by 414 Life, the Office of Violence Prevention and Moms Demand Action Thursday, June 2.
But, while those organizations are working to prevent crime, Johnson says it is up to the state and federal government to change gun laws.
"When they're killed in the city, especially at the hand of a gun, those are not just Milwaukeeans who are suffering that consequence. those are also Wisconsinites, those are also Americans," said Johnson.
Tomorrow kicks also kicks off "Wear Orange Weekend".
Wear orange was inspired by a 15-year-old Chicago high school student killed by gunfire in 2013.
People around the nation now honor her life by wearing orange because it is the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.
