MATC appoints new director of community education, liaison for Hispanic-Serving Institution

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Area Technical College has just appointed a new director of community education who will also serve as a liaison for the Hispanic-Serving Institution or "HSI" at the college.

A ceremony was held at MATC today for Doctor Patricia Torres Najera, who was chosen among 30 applicants over the span of 4 months.

The name might sound familiar to some as she previously ran for county supervisor for District 11 back in 2016 and also ran for alderwoman in Milwaukee's 13th district in 2019.  She says being chosen for this position is an honor.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be part of the MATC campus and Walker Square community, I grew up as far as my professional career here 30 years ago and so to be here now, working with the families and students who want to begin their career in education is super exciting," said Torres Najera.

The ceremony where she held her presentation was very festive -- decked out in Colombian colors.  That's because her parents migrated to the Midwest from Colombia. She is a first-generation Latina, so the first in her family to obtain an undergrad degree and later went on to complete her masters and a PhD! So, she is definitely someone to look up to at the university.
