Martin's HR buries Brewers in Pittsburgh opener

PITTSBURGH - For seven innings, the Brewers looked like the team that spent five months in first place. Yovani Gallardo threw seven scoreless innings, striking out a career high 11 batters, and Rickie Weeks homered to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead.

But in the eighth, the Brewers turned back into the slumping group that has slipped to the edge of postseason elimination.

Jonathan Broxton allowed a three-run homer to Russell Martin and the Pirates pushed Milwaukee back to 4.5 games back with a 4-2 win Friday.

The Pirates can eliminate the Brewers from postseason contention with wins the next two days in Pittsburgh.
