Marquette scholarship programs boosted with $4.6M Burke Foundation gift

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Marquette University has received a $4.6 million donation from the Burke Foundation to support two of its scholarship programs focused on service.

The funds are designated for the Burke Scholars program, which benefits undergraduates, and the Trinity Fellows program for graduate students. These programs integrate academic pursuits with community service.

The Burke Scholars program provides scholarships to Wisconsin high school seniors with a strong focus on community service and aspirations in public service careers. The Trinity Fellows program offers a comprehensive package for service-oriented graduate students, including full-tuition scholarships and stipends.

According to a Wednesday, Nov. 29 press release from Marquette, the Burke Scholars have collectively completed over 200,000 hours of community service, with 180 alumni serving various community organizations in Milwaukee, while the Trinity Fellows program, since its inception in 2000, has produced 210 alumni, with the majority holding leadership roles in the nonprofit and public sectors.

Kathleen Burke of the Burke Foundation commented in Marquette's press release, expressing the foundation's pride in where the funding is going. "We continue to witness students grow into changemakers and active citizens, making a difference in our communities and state."
