MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 37-year-old male is in critical condition after experiencing a medical emergency. It happened after police used an electronic control device during an investigation.

It happened on Wednesday, May 22, around 8:38 p.m. at Pine Lawn Memorial Park.

The Wauwatosa Police Department say they arrived at the park to assist the Wauwatosa Fire Department with a request for medical services at a remembrance event.

Shortly after the fire department's arrival, they observed a physical fight between two individuals and called police for assistance.

According to police, officers attempted to separate the individuals involved in the fight, while trying to determine what had happened and who needed medical attention.

Police say one individual became argumentative and refused to comply with police orders. When an officer tried to lead the individual away from the scene to de-escalate the situation, he resisted and tried to punch the officer. A second officer then used an electronic control device, also known as a taser. Police say it effectively stopped the individual's behavior, allowing the officer to gain control of the individual on the ground.

Officers took him into custody, then recognized he was in medical destress. Paramedics determined that he was not breathing and had no pulse. Life saving measures were performed, and the man was transported to the hospital. Police say he remains in critical condition.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

Three officers were placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
