Man impersonating Officer Pulls over 3 Teens
MADISON, Wis. (CHANNEL 3000) - A man impersonating a cop pulled over a teen in Madison Wednesday, police said.
Town of Madison police Chief Scott Gregory said officers responded to a report of an 18-year-old who said he was pulled over by a vehicle with police lights on the west Beltline at Park Street at 11:51 p.m.
Police said the teen told officers he stopped and a white man in his mid-40s with a gun in his hand approached the teen's vehicle. The driver and the two 16-year-old boys who were passengers raised their hands, according to the report.
The police impersonator demanded to know why the driver ran a red light, police said. The man reached into the vehicle, turned it off and threw the keys into a nearby grassy area. The fake cop then left the scene.
The teens in the vehicle called 911.
Gregory said the town of Madison officers reached out to other law enforcement agencies to determine if any federal, state or local police had a black Dodge Durango pickup truck with gray or silver trim.
"At this time it appears no law enforcement agency in Dane County has an unmarked squad car of this description that would have been in this area," Gregory said in a news release.
The Durango driver was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall with a slender build. He had short brown hair and was clean shaven according to the report.
