Madison man arrested after allegedly assaulting, strangling 13-year-old boy

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The UW-Madison Police Department received a report of a possible child abuse situation over the weekend.

Police were called to the Eagle Heights community on the northwest end of the UW-Madison campus shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday.

A 13-year-old boy had called UWPD and reported that he was assaulted and strangled by the suspect.

Officers responded and found the boy with significant injuries to his face and arms, and pain in his chest and abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital.

A UWPD Security Office later located the suspect driving on campus.

He was identified as Mark Shawanokasic, 37, of Madison. 

Shawanokasic was taken into custody and faces charges of child abuse, disorderly conduct, and strangulation.

The investigation remains ongoing.
