'Lots of hidden gems:' Doors Open 2025 encourages community to explore throughout Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- This weekend is Door's Open Milwaukee, an annual event that showcases the city's architecture, history, culture, and neighborhoods.
This year, more than 160 locations are participating, ranging from bars to churches to buildings and everything in between.
"In general, we are open to the community on other days, but we love to participate as we love our city too and we're a part of a bigger thing across the city," said Yesenia Villanueva, the senior director for the Urban Ecology Center's Menomonee Valley branch. "Our mission is to connect people in cities with nature and each other."
Villanueva said they've joined in on the event for years, to help either remind people they're there, or to introduce themselves to new neighbors.
"We love that people get to learn about us as an environmental community center," Villanueva said.
The event covers Milwaukee County and is divided into certain parts of the map.
Dolores Cookson is the "captain" of part of the south side.
"The captain makes sure that people get the surveys, we keep track of how many people come to individual places," Cookson said.
One of her favorite parts? Helping others discover somewhere that might've been next door to them all along.
"There are lots of gems that people don't know about unless you have a specific reason to go looking for something," Cookson said. "It's so people know about your city and it's great."
