NOW: Local nonprofits participate in Giving Tuesday 2022

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Local nonprofits are participating in Giving Tuesday 2022.

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving is recognized internationally as Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to giving back to the community.

Donations made to the Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) on Tuesday will be matched up to $30,000.

Angela Speed, the vice president of marketing and communications at WHS, said the nonprofit has a goal of raising $150,000.

"You can have twice the impact on animals in need, just in this single day on Giving Tuesday," Speed said.

The donations will help pay for veterinary costs and care, according to Speed.

"It's amazing to us how Giving Tuesday has grown, and people give to charities that are near and dear to their heart, Speed said. "For many people, that's animals."

Bloom 360 Learning Community, a private school and day center for children with neurodivergent needs, will use all donations made on Giving Tuesday for scholarships.

"In order to be able to provide such a high-quality program, you know, we charge tuition, and we want families to be able to attend that may not otherwise afford that full tuition," founder and president, Laura Rauman, said.

Rauman told CBS 58 the nonprofit depends on the donations made on Giving Tuesday.

"Even though we fundraise and apply for grants and have other ways to raise some money, Giving Tuesday is a critical portion of our budget, and we’re a small nonprofit, and so this is very meaningful to us," Rauman said.

People can participate in Giving Tuesday in ways that aren't financial, by donating their time and energy with volunteering.
