MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The pouring rain didn't stop early Juneteenth celebrations from taking place Wednesday morning.
Milwaukee leaders gathered at the Zeidler Municipal Building to raise the Juneteenth flag.
It's now flying over City Hall. Milwaukee officials say it's important to remember and reflect on the history of Juneteenth.
"It's about freedom. It's about liberation. It's about showing us who we really are. When we come together, even when there are big, huge, trying challenges before us, there is absolutely nothing that we cannot do," Mayor Cavalier Johnson said.
Milwaukee is home to one of the longest-running Juneteenth celebrations in the country.
The big Juneteenth parade starts at 9 a.m. Thursday at 14th and Atkinson. There will be an array of floats, dance teams, and marching bands.
Our own Frankie Jupiter will also be taking part in the parade and will be live with interviews from organizers. Watch for his coverage starting at 4:30 a.m.
