MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- There are many local events scheduled this weekend to pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 93rd birthday, southeastern Wisconsin communities are reflecting on the person who continues to carry a significant impact.

"As we gather today to honor the life, the principles, and the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I want you to understand the fullness of his dream as we ask ourselves how do we regain hope," NAACP Chair Corey Prince said.

Prince was the keynote speaker at the 14th Annual Laying of the Wreath Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ceremony in Racine on Friday. His speech pointed out many challenges and disparities King fought to overcome in his lifetime are still prevalent today.

"From stone mountain of Georgia to the Lambeau leap of Green Bay, let us partake in that dream," Prince said.

There are many informational and volunteer events around town for the whole family this holiday weekend.

The Milwaukee Public Library is hosting a virtual event to talk about King's impact.

Kids Impact Community is hosting a virtual event, followed by a service project.

United Way of Milwaukee and Waukesha County is also hosting virtual events and suggests people take time to give back to the community.
