MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Judy Cohen of Lakeside Educational Services talked about the role of oral reading in building literacy skills when she joined us on Wednesday, April 9.
The discussion shared strategies for reading with young students. She outlined three core benefits, summarized in the acronym FALV: fluency, active listening and vocabulary.
Reading out loud, she said, helps children develop rhythm, accuracy and expression while reinforcing comprehension and word recognition.
To assist at home, Cohen recommended parents read alongside their children, sentence by sentence, while using a finger or pointer to follow the text. She stressed that reading should be focused, not rushed, and advised adults to avoid treating reading time as a passive or background activity.
