MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Kia America is partnering with local dealers to provide free anti-theft vehicle software upgrades to Kia owners.

The updates will be conducted at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Kia technicians started taking customers Friday morning to install software updates.

"So many of them have been stolen here," said Ruthie Price, a Kia owner who stopped by to get her vehicle upgraded.

Kia auto thefts have been an issue nationwide, including in Milwaukee. So far this year, 379 Kias have been stolen, according to data provided to CBS 58 by Milwaukee police.

Drivers say this anti-theft upgrade is giving them peace of mind. "I got my Kia Rio in 2021 and I’ve loved it, but I know there’s been a problem with them getting stolen. My grandma actually got hers stolen in Milwaukee and anything I can do to make it safer, thought I should do it," said Ava Fournier.

After the software upgrade, Kia technicians will also apply window decals with the goal being to deter future criminal activity against Kias. Free steering wheel locks will also be distributed, for additional security. The process was completed in less than 10 minutes for most drivers on Friday.

"They did a good job. It was super fast...and they explained what they did,” said Chris Jurgilanis.

The clinic will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. No appointments are required.
