Joint Funeral Held for Teenage Crash Victims
A pair of Milwaukee teenagers were laid to rest Saturday just over a week after they were killed in a car crash.
15-year-olds Latrey Hale and Demetrius Batchelor were passengers in a car that lost control near 35th and Keefe last Friday.
The driver of that car, 17-year-old Donte Barnes, is facing two felony charges for homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.
"We don't hold no grudge against him," says Batchelor's cousin Alesha Colbert. "Because we know that it was all an accident, and we know he's hurt too, because he didn't mean for it to happen that way, nobody did."
Hale and Batchelor were remembered for their love of basketball, and sense of humor. More than 100 people gathered at the Mason Temple Church Saturday morning for a visitation and service.
Friends like Geovonnie Brooks have spent the week trying to come to grips with the accident.
"I woke up to the news, and my mom told me, she was at work and she was crying," he says. "She said Demetrius was gone, and I just started breaking down."
