Detective James Hensley of the Milwaukee Police Department is on a mission to give back to kids in need. While on a Safari to South Africa in 2016, the detective saw the great need and lack of resources for people in one poverty-stricken village and wanted to do something to help. But it was on a return trip with bags of toys and simple supplies that the detective noticed an even greater problem. Many of the school children didn’t seem to own shoes.
Detective Hensley became friends with an outfitter who works for one South African school and in September of 2017 learned about “The Shoes that Grow,” which are $16.00 shoes that adjust up to 5 sizes. Hensley, along with the other homicide detectives in his unit raised $800 to purchase 50 pairs of shoes.
On CBS 58 Sunday Morning, Amanda Porterfield spoke to Detective Hensley about what it was like to return once again to deliver the shoes.
