Ice shanty removal deadline looms despite heavy snow

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Even though there's still winter weather ahead, the Wisconsin DNR is staying firm on its deadline for ice fishing shanties to be off the ice.

Permanent shelters, those normally not removed daily from the ice, should be taken off inland lakes south of Highway 64 by Sunday. Some anglers near Wausau have to snowblow a trail to their shanties because of all the snow.

"Try to get out there ahead of that deadline and get some arrangements made. And with all the snow, I know some people have had to kind of work together and get some equipment out on the ice to plow some paths to get those moved out," said Jake Holsclaw, Warden with the Wisconsin DNR.

The DNR has a hotline to call if you're having trouble removing a shanty.
