RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) – Interstate 94 southbound near WIS 20 in Racine County closed on Friday, Jan. 1, due to a multi-car crash.

The Village of Caledonia Police Department is warning drivers the road is slick and visibility is low.

As of 2:30 this afternoon, all lanes on I-94 opened back up. Icy and treacherous is how some drivers we spoke with described conditions on the interstate.

“It’s icy, it’s slippery. The guys are out there doing the best they can, but really if there’s no reason to be out on new years day, I’d stay home,” says Rob Schroeder.

Schroeder is owner of Tovar Snow Professionals. They maintain parking lots and sidewalks for commercial properties.

“It’s been a busy week. We’ve been in a snow drought up here, it’s unusual,” says Schroeder.

Officials say these icy conditions led to a large number of accidents.

“Don’t get on the road. Fundamentally we had plans so we’re going, but it’s probably the worst driving I’ve had in a long time,” says Peter Burke.

Burke is driving from a Chicago suburb to Milwaukee.

“It’s cold, it’s windy. It’s supposed to snow later on tonight. This is all going to freeze up on us. It’s supposed to be below freezing tonight so all I can say is stay home,” says Burke.

Officials remind you to use caution If you need to be out on the road, or avoid being out if at all possible.

This is a developing story, stay with CBS 58 on-air and online for updates.
